- [00:00:02.925]Welcome back, halftime of the Husker's matchup
- [00:00:04.350]with the Kansas Jayhawlks. Greg Sharp,
- [00:00:05.709]at our Huskers Sports Network Studio.
- [00:00:07.203]Delighted to be joined by University of Nebraska
- [00:00:08.926]Lincoln Chancellor, Ronny Green.
- [00:00:10.707]Basketball season is here, what beautiful,
- [00:00:13.146]five years now, Pinnacle Bank Arena.
- [00:00:15.000]Folks love coming out and seeing basketball,
- [00:00:16.434]whether it be the men or the women.
- [00:00:18.431]It's just amazing.
- [00:00:19.894]That arena is already five years old.
- [00:00:21.443]It's hard to believe it's five years old.
- [00:00:23.341]Can remember when it was being talked about
- [00:00:25.261]and planned by the JPAN, the city and the university
- [00:00:27.640]jointly as a big project, getting the support
- [00:00:31.607]from the public to build what's turned into
- [00:00:34.531]a really phenomenal facility for the
- [00:00:36.753]City of Lincoln, for the community,
- [00:00:38.456]and for the University certainly.
- [00:00:40.908]As a basketball venue, The Vault, now as well known,
- [00:00:43.335]and it's a great atmosphere for our fans
- [00:00:46.403]and for our athletic program,
- [00:00:48.131]and for Men's and Women's basketball.
- [00:00:50.245]And it's a good example of a partnership
- [00:00:52.259]this town and gown relationship that the University...
- [00:00:56.653]Sometimes people don't realize here
- [00:00:58.268]we have one of the best relationships
- [00:01:00.259]with the city that we're in of
- [00:01:02.243]any university of the country.
- [00:01:03.800]I hear that from my colleagues all over the U.S.
- [00:01:07.321]Great to be in this PBA facility
- [00:01:09.603]that's been so impactful for Lincoln.
- [00:01:11.575]You and I have talked recently about
- [00:01:13.069]innovations coming out of the University.
- [00:01:14.808]One award-winning innovator is helping others
- [00:01:17.050]maintain their outdoor playing fields
- [00:01:19.576]with an app to better manage and care for
- [00:01:21.539]natural turf across Nebraska and really
- [00:01:23.747]around the world. Is that correct?
- [00:01:25.127]That's right Greg. We have world leading
- [00:01:28.229]research all over our campus, and one of the areas
- [00:01:30.839]that we're a leader in is in turf grass
- [00:01:32.739]development and turf grass management
- [00:01:35.448]in our department of agronomy and horticulture
- [00:01:37.581]on the east campus. And Bill Krueser,
- [00:01:40.813]who is a turf grass specialist with
- [00:01:43.076]Nebraska Extension, is part of our extension efforts
- [00:01:46.105]across the State, worked within UTech ventures,
- [00:01:49.209]that's our tech transfer arm for the University
- [00:01:52.394]that takes technology we develop
- [00:01:53.942]and commercializes it out into the public
- [00:01:56.595]to launch a start-up that simplifies
- [00:01:58.852]the really sustainable management of turfs.
- [00:02:01.617]So think of turf for golf courses or for ball fields,
- [00:02:05.718]all kinds of form of turf as well as
- [00:02:09.064]lawn turf for that matter. He developed an app called
- [00:02:13.636]the "Green Keeper" that's based on research models
- [00:02:17.646]that use weather data to determine how long
- [00:02:20.228]managers should wait before reapplying products
- [00:02:23.820]to the turf as a management process.
- [00:02:26.414]So that's an example in Dr. Kreuser's work
- [00:02:30.126]of really taking Nebraska research
- [00:02:32.175]that's done in the lab or in the field here,
- [00:02:34.894]turning it into to tools that industry
- [00:02:36.964]can use and apply on a regular and routine basis.
- [00:02:40.889]He now has that app, featuring 570 research models
- [00:02:45.736]based on different products,
- [00:02:48.358]different grasses, different management practices
- [00:02:51.364]that are used throughout the industry
- [00:02:52.826]including guidance for pest control,
- [00:02:56.345]for bug control, and for soil testing.
- [00:02:59.492]He 6,000 customers now globally using the app
- [00:03:04.025]across 6 continents all over the world,
- [00:03:06.244]almost all of the 50 U.S. states,
- [00:03:08.398]mostly golf courses spread throughout the U.S.
- [00:03:12.082]that are using it. High-end golf, football,
- [00:03:14.494]softball facilities, like I talked about earlier
- [00:03:17.092]that host major championships, and several
- [00:03:19.918]communities in Nebraska here using this as well
- [00:03:23.451]in these playing fields.
- [00:03:25.934]So very excited about the work that Dr. Kreuser's done,
- [00:03:30.177]and now the application of it out in the field
- [00:03:32.515]through this app of GreenKeeper.
- [00:03:34.344]Just amazing how much research
- [00:03:35.498]and innovation is going on at the University
- [00:03:37.305]and I'm sure this is just one example.
- [00:03:39.124]Absolutely. We had this past year a record
- [00:03:42.760]for research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:03:45.291]the flagship research campus of the University.
- [00:03:48.505]We have over 300 million dollars
- [00:03:50.911]this past year that was invested
- [00:03:52.873]in research across all 9 of our colleges
- [00:03:56.186]in the University. We ranked among the top
- [00:03:59.092]100 institutions world-wide, all over the the world of
- [00:04:02.911]servil 700 or more, ranked around the world
- [00:04:06.635]in earing U.S. patents in the past year.
- [00:04:09.469]A report from the National Academy of Inventors
- [00:04:11.998]and Intellectual Property Owners Association
- [00:04:14.297]ranked us, as a system, as the 70th ranked
- [00:04:18.808]university in the world. Something to be
- [00:04:21.597]very proud of here, where most of the work was done
- [00:04:25.807]at UNL, and some in partnership with UniMed
- [00:04:28.319]and the UNMC folks, UNO and UNK and the system as well.
- [00:04:32.296]So, innovating change in the world every day
- [00:04:34.475]with research that matters.
- [00:04:35.882]Fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing and
- [00:04:37.245]enjoy the second half!
- [00:04:38.227]Go Big Red!
- [00:04:39.410]With us here at half-time, Matt Cook is back
- [00:04:42.557]with some first-half numbers in the second-half next.
