- [00:00:08.500]Hi, I'm Greg Krueger a Weed Science
- [00:00:10.620]and Pesticide Application Technology Specialist
- [00:00:12.960]at the University of Nebraska,
- [00:00:14.080]Lincolns West Central Research
- [00:00:15.460]and Extension Center North Platte.
- [00:00:17.330]Today I'm gonna talk through how to clean a tank
- [00:00:20.980]and why it's important to go through
- [00:00:22.950]cleaning the sprayer out thoroughly.
- [00:00:25.240]So when we talk about spray applications
- [00:00:29.560]the tank clean out part is one of the most crucial
- [00:00:31.980]because we don't wanna carry one pesticide
- [00:00:34.880]from one field, or one crop into another crop.
- [00:00:37.741]There's risk for damage of that subsequent crop,
- [00:00:42.090]which could result in yield loss
- [00:00:44.160]or economic losses in other ways
- [00:00:46.670]as well as fields that don't look
- [00:00:49.200]quite the way we want 'em to.
- [00:00:50.830]So we have these unesthetic situation.
- [00:00:53.770]So making sure that we thoroughly clean that sprayer out
- [00:00:57.690]when we get finished with one application
- [00:00:59.290]before we move to another is absolutely critical.
- [00:01:02.060]Now with that said, as we move into using more
- [00:01:05.970]and more dicamba tolerant crops
- [00:01:08.025]we're seeing that this is even more critical
- [00:01:10.870]because of some of the very, very low doses of dicamba
- [00:01:14.970]that can cause injury in non dicamba tolerant soybeans.
- [00:01:18.370]So when we talk about tank clean out it's really important.
- [00:01:22.250]As we look ahead we're seeing more
- [00:01:24.880]and more restrictions on pesticide applications,
- [00:01:27.290]documenting how and when we've cleaned out that sprayer.
- [00:01:31.630]So making sure that we do a thorough job
- [00:01:33.970]is important to minimizing any kind of risk
- [00:01:36.350]of injury to subsequent crops and making sure
- [00:01:39.790]that we've go the proper documentation
- [00:01:42.240]from a legal standpoint.
- [00:01:43.920]So when we think about cleaning out a sprayer,
- [00:01:45.817]all sprayers have a few common parts in common.
- [00:01:50.302]The first ones the tank
- [00:01:51.691]and this is the biggest harbor for potential residues.
- [00:01:55.140]So when we start to clean out the sprayer
- [00:01:57.920]the first place we're gonna think.
- [00:01:59.436]This tank is gonna hold whatever we were spraying.
- [00:02:03.680]We've gotta make sure we get inside there,
- [00:02:05.389]rinse down the walls and get that clean.
- [00:02:08.506]Every application we would recommend a triple rinse.
- [00:02:12.070]Some labels may be even more restrictive than that,
- [00:02:14.530]so make sure you consult the label
- [00:02:16.100]for the product you're using.
- [00:02:17.238]for the product you're using.
- [00:02:18.071]From the tank that solution
- [00:02:20.020]when we're making a spray application
- [00:02:21.480]is gonna run into the hoses.
- [00:02:23.210]The hoses are the second place
- [00:02:24.610]that we're gonna start to think about
- [00:02:26.250]in terms of potential risk of tank contamination.
- [00:02:29.870]So cleaning out those hoses and lines are gonna be critical.
- [00:02:33.263]Again, like we said with the tank
- [00:02:35.940]a triple rinse is gonna be good.
- [00:02:37.740]We're gonna wanna flush that boom with fresh water,
- [00:02:40.240]clean water to make sure we get everything out of the tank.
- [00:02:45.080]Some of our new sprayer self propelled sprayers,
- [00:02:47.768]which are gonna be much larger than the one behind me,
- [00:02:50.498]could hold as much as 50 gallons of solution
- [00:02:54.450]after that tank is completely emptied.
- [00:02:56.520]Just in the hoses, lines, and pumps.
- [00:02:59.300]So making sure that we get all of that,
- [00:03:01.300]the solution that could be settin' I those lines
- [00:03:04.190]is gonna be critical.
- [00:03:06.660]On top of that, on the back side here,
- [00:03:08.870]you can see that we've got a filter system.
- [00:03:11.410]Pullin' off those filters that could harbor residues
- [00:03:15.420]is gonna be critical, making sure those filters are clean
- [00:03:17.760]when we go into that next field,
- [00:03:20.290]that next crop with the different pesticide is important.
- [00:03:23.940]The other place that we wanna check is the nozzles.
- [00:03:27.160]At the nozzles we a lot of the times
- [00:03:29.020]have tip screens or the nozzles themselves
- [00:03:31.390]could be harbors for residues.
- [00:03:33.610]Making sure that those are clean is also important.
- [00:03:36.690]So again, every sprayer's gonna have those components.
- [00:03:41.092]How many different filters and nozzles
- [00:03:45.100]and nozzles, whether we have nozzles screens
- [00:03:47.110]is gonna vary from sprayer to sprayer,
- [00:03:49.000]but all those components are potential harbors
- [00:03:51.370]for residues.
- [00:03:53.530]Now when we start to think about how do we set up a sprayer.
- [00:03:56.660]I know when I go to purchase a new sprayer,
- [00:03:59.551]tank contamination's not the first thing on my mind,
- [00:04:03.180]but as we think about purchasing or building a new sprayer
- [00:04:07.690]we may wanna consider some of these component as we do that.
- [00:04:11.160]Again, starting with the tank,
- [00:04:12.930]if we go to a stainless steel tank,
- [00:04:14.810]stainless steel tanks tend to be much easier to clean out.
- [00:04:17.700]Less likely to harbor residues.
- [00:04:19.600]Some of the poly tanks, if we leave a spray solution
- [00:04:23.720]set in that tank over time,
- [00:04:25.160]Those pesticides can pull into the plastic
- [00:04:27.199]making it more difficult to get those cleaned out.
- [00:04:30.560]When we think about our hoses that's another good place
- [00:04:33.540]to think about when we're putting a new sprayer together.
- [00:04:36.480]Generally speaking, you get what you pay for.
- [00:04:39.500]A lot of times though, what we see is the higher end hoses,
- [00:04:42.370]ten to have less pitting in 'em
- [00:04:44.068]and they're much easier to clean.
- [00:04:46.239]Those Polyethylene jacketed hoses
- [00:04:48.900]and thins like that, while they do cost more,
- [00:04:51.610]will probably lead to less trouble
- [00:04:53.640]in terms of tank contamination in the future.
- [00:04:56.850]All right, so when we're cleaning our sprayers out
- [00:04:59.010]obviously if we're triple rinsing this thing.
- [00:05:01.180]We're gonna create quite a bit of waste.
- [00:05:04.258]The first thing I want you to think about
- [00:05:07.030]is when and where to clean that sprayer
- [00:05:08.980]and we talked about between every crop,
- [00:05:12.170]or maybe even more often than that.
- [00:05:14.530]As the label guides us, it's important.
- [00:05:17.720]When we do triple rinses that sprayer
- [00:05:20.160]we've gotta dispose of that rinsate somewhere.
- [00:05:23.680]The best time to do it
- [00:05:24.513]is while you're still in the field
- [00:05:26.390]that you've just finished spraying.
- [00:05:27.816]Go ahead and get that triple rinse in
- [00:05:30.880]and spray it back out over the field,
- [00:05:32.500]where we're not at any risk of causing damage to
- [00:05:36.019]an environmental area that we don't want to be in.
- [00:05:38.851]If I can't do that, another option
- [00:05:41.450]is to take that spare back to the shop.
- [00:05:43.680]If I've got a loading pad that has a drain,
- [00:05:47.003]that's gonna collect that rinsate.
- [00:05:49.130]So we can also look at doing it hat way.
- [00:05:52.370]Beyond that though, the options are not really good,
- [00:05:54.530]so those are probably the first two places
- [00:05:56.720]that one should think about cleaning out a sprayer.
- [00:06:00.140]All right, as we think about cleaning this sprayer out.
- [00:06:02.617]There's a couple standard procedures
- [00:06:05.597]the we wanna make sure we do.
- [00:06:07.160]The triple rinse we've talked about in detail.
- [00:06:10.650]On top of that, one of the things
- [00:06:12.560]that we would wanna talk about
- [00:06:13.806]is if we're flushing that boom
- [00:06:15.963]a lot of our new sprayer has some sort of end cap
- [00:06:18.990]or some sort of cap on the end of that boom
- [00:06:23.330]so they we can pull that off, flush out anything
- [00:06:25.940]that might have settled in there.
- [00:06:28.110]This particular sprayer doesn't have that,
- [00:06:29.980]but a lot of your sprayers do.
- [00:06:31.770]Another thing we wanna do is go ahead
- [00:06:33.000]and just go down the line,
- [00:06:34.420]pull those nozzles off,
- [00:06:35.253]put 'em in a five gallon bucket of water.
- [00:06:38.700]Let 'em soak so that we get
- [00:06:40.880]all of the residues and stuff of that way
- [00:06:43.500]and I know it's time consuming
- [00:06:46.660]and a lot of you probably
- [00:06:47.690]aren't gonna take my advice on this,
- [00:06:48.980]but with the toxicity and the low dose response
- [00:06:53.780]of some of the pesticides we handle.
- [00:06:55.670]Just take in quick minutes to take a pressure washer
- [00:06:58.810]or some sort of sprayer
- [00:07:00.190]and wash down the entire spray system
- [00:07:02.840]could be really crucial in terms of mitigating
- [00:07:05.517]unintended effects from a tank contamination
- [00:07:08.570]or sprayer contamination.
- [00:07:10.238]As we go about this, it becomes really critical.
- [00:07:15.289]Make sure you consult that label.
- [00:07:18.180]Now every labels gonna have a little bit different guidance
- [00:07:20.680]on how to clean out that sprayer.
- [00:07:22.250]And we're seeing that most labels
- [00:07:23.780]are becoming more and more specific
- [00:07:25.760]in terms of the procedures that they wanna see you follow
- [00:07:28.520]to make that sprayer as clean as possible
- [00:07:31.390]at the end of the day.
- [00:07:32.890]All right, so now that we're kind of
- [00:07:34.880]reachin' the end of this segment,
- [00:07:36.349]we want us to kind of circle back around.
- [00:07:38.333]As we talked about at the very beginning
- [00:07:40.702]I'm gonna beg you guys.
- [00:07:42.380]Make sure you use the appropriate PPE.
- [00:07:44.180]May sure you've got the gloves, log sleeve coat,
- [00:07:48.270]long pants close to the shoes,
- [00:07:50.480]glasses or other eye protection.
- [00:07:53.650]In some cases certain labels may require even more than that
- [00:07:57.780]so make sure you have that appropriate PPE
- [00:07:59.980]for whatever products you might have been using.
- [00:08:03.310]When you do that, it really helps protect you
- [00:08:06.847]from potential exposure to those chemistries.
- [00:08:10.120]Now again, just to wrap things up here.
- [00:08:14.980]Cleaning out that tank is absolutely critical.
- [00:08:17.568]In some cases there are certain crops
- [00:08:21.170]that are so sensitive to some of the pesticides out there,
- [00:08:24.130]that you really can't spend too much time
- [00:08:26.580]and you can't get that sprayer too clean.
- [00:08:28.320]So when you're cleaning out that sprayer
- [00:08:30.480]at the end of the day.
- [00:08:31.700]Make sure you're keeping record of that
- [00:08:34.059]so that you're in compliance with
- [00:08:36.590]any potential label guidelines and restrictions there
- [00:08:40.760]as well as making sure we get that sprayer
- [00:08:42.670]absolutely as clean as possible
- [00:08:44.210]so that we don't cause any unintended affects.
