- [00:00:01.570]We welcome you back, Countdown to Kickoff here
- [00:00:03.110]on the Oscar Sports Network,
- [00:00:04.240]heading to an 11:05 kick today
- [00:00:06.030]for the season finale for the Big Red as they take on
- [00:00:08.601]the Iowa Hawkeyes.
- [00:00:10.350]And we are sitting down as we do each and every week
- [00:00:12.360]with the Chancellor of University Nebraska Lincoln,
- [00:00:14.530]Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:15.780]Happy Thanksgiving, hope you had the chance
- [00:00:17.174]to consume some bird yesterday.
- [00:00:20.060]We sure did, like I think everybody's on the post-day
- [00:00:23.970]of Thanksgiving, and givin' thanks for all the blessings
- [00:00:26.940]we have everyday in our life.
- [00:00:29.400]It's a great time of year, and great to be here
- [00:00:31.980]for football game today.
- [00:00:33.450]Absolutely, you received some really good academic news
- [00:00:36.520]regarding Husker student athletes about a week ago.
- [00:00:39.860]What can you tell our audience?
- [00:00:41.380]Well you know we're very, very proud
- [00:00:43.070]of our student athletes across the board
- [00:00:45.860]and what they do on the field and the arena,
- [00:00:48.950]in their sports, but we're also very very proud
- [00:00:51.340]of the academic success of our student athletes as a whole.
- [00:00:55.200]We often say it's the best place to be a student athlete
- [00:00:58.100]in the country and we believe that,
- [00:00:59.720]and we've continued to see excellence and growth
- [00:01:04.740]in our graduation success rate
- [00:01:06.660]that's calculated across all of our sports
- [00:01:08.920]and this was a special year because
- [00:01:11.640]after seeing six consecutive years of growth in our GSR,
- [00:01:16.330]the goal had been to break the 90% threshold,
- [00:01:19.330]and we broke it this year.
- [00:01:20.730]So I know all of our Husker athletics folks
- [00:01:24.110]are very excited about that,
- [00:01:25.170]the University's very excited about it.
- [00:01:28.110]So we're now in that upper tier
- [00:01:30.000]of the Big Ten in our academic success,
- [00:01:33.500]so we have nine of our sports who had a perfect 100% GSR,
- [00:01:38.360]which is something to be celebrated,
- [00:01:40.030]including women's basketball, women's gymnastics,
- [00:01:42.670]rifle, soccer, softball, women's tennis,
- [00:01:45.880]volleyball, men's gymnastics, and men's tennis,
- [00:01:48.810]and we have three teams that over the last 14 years
- [00:01:52.440]since the GSR has been calculated,
- [00:01:54.620]have achieved a perfect score every year.
- [00:01:57.430]Our women's basketball program, our women's tennis program,
- [00:02:01.650]and our volleyball program's all are in that elite category.
- [00:02:05.430]So just really great to see Nebraska continue to be leader
- [00:02:08.900]in the classroom as well as on the field and in the arena.
- [00:02:12.100]No doubt, well sticking with subject student achievement
- [00:02:14.450]I hear you hit the road this past weekend to help recognize
- [00:02:17.450]the achievements of some Nebraska high school students
- [00:02:20.050]and extend the offer of scholarships.
- [00:02:21.570]How many students were involved in this?
- [00:02:23.450]Well we had a big day this past Sunday in Omaha,
- [00:02:27.210]at the CHS Center there in Omaha.
- [00:02:30.730]This is the fifteenth year that we've had
- [00:02:32.980]a Nebraska achievement reception
- [00:02:35.500]for students across the greater Omaha area.
- [00:02:38.080]All of the high schools across greater Omaha.
- [00:02:41.080]Man this was a really big one,
- [00:02:42.730]so we talked about, I know Amber Williams,
- [00:02:45.680]our director of enrollment and management for the university
- [00:02:50.110]started this when she came here 16 years ago.
- [00:02:53.680]And she talked about how there were a couple 100 people
- [00:02:55.950]that were involved in that first one 15 years ago,
- [00:02:59.250]about 100 students and some of their families.
- [00:03:02.660]On Sunday we had 1,700 people at the CHS Center,
- [00:03:07.400]from all across, pretty much every high school
- [00:03:09.680]in the greater Omaha area, 550 students,
- [00:03:13.360]and their families and educators,
- [00:03:16.070]recognizing their academic achievements.
- [00:03:17.980]So these are all seniors, currently seniors,
- [00:03:21.160]finishing their secondary education,
- [00:03:25.843]coming to higher education in the coming year in 2019.
- [00:03:30.370]So we recognize them and made a scholarship offer
- [00:03:33.600]to each and every one of them.
- [00:03:35.670]About half of those students first generation students,
- [00:03:38.217]and their families to be able to go to college,
- [00:03:41.020]or look at going to college,
- [00:03:43.200]they all received scholarship offers of $1,000 or more
- [00:03:47.340]to come to UNL in the fall.
- [00:03:49.110]And then the other half, students who have families
- [00:03:51.500]that have been in involved in higher education,
- [00:03:54.780]also received scholarship offers,
- [00:03:56.630]so it was really cool to be able to shake their hands
- [00:04:00.070]and to meet them, and to see the huge talent
- [00:04:03.120]that will be coming to University and what we think will
- [00:04:05.700]be our biggest entering class ever in our 140 year history
- [00:04:09.820]when they come here next fall.
- [00:04:10.990]Ah, that's exciting, really fun to hear about that.
- [00:04:12.960]You know one of the great benefits
- [00:04:15.800]of joining the Big Ten Conference was being able
- [00:04:17.700]to be named a Big Ten university which I think is now
- [00:04:20.160]helping you attract students
- [00:04:21.330]from across the country as well, right?
- [00:04:23.500]Oh, absolutely.
- [00:04:24.792]We continue to see growth in our enrollment overall.
- [00:04:29.180]For students from Nebraska and in students
- [00:04:31.820]that are coming to us from all over the world.
- [00:04:33.500]You know we, this year almost 26,000 students at UNL,
- [00:04:38.680]the biggest out of state enrollment we've ever had
- [00:04:41.760]in our history so overall, of our undergraduate
- [00:04:44.220]and graduate students we're about two thirds in state
- [00:04:46.850]Nebraska students coming to us from all over the state.
- [00:04:49.660]And about a third from all over the world.
- [00:04:51.570]Literally every state in the US,
- [00:04:53.290]136 countries around the world represented on our campus.
- [00:04:57.770]This year our growth in out of state students,
- [00:05:01.550]another 5% almost growth in our
- [00:05:03.720]out of state student population.
- [00:05:05.990]From Pennsylvania and Texas and California and Tennessee,
- [00:05:08.790]really across the board.
- [00:05:10.320]And another thing we had this past week
- [00:05:13.760]is we recognized students in our freshman class,
- [00:05:17.220]so those who started with us this semester,
- [00:05:19.910]who were that near perfect, or perfect ACT scores
- [00:05:24.710]in their entrance, National Merit finalists, academically.
- [00:05:29.330]We have 65 of those students on our campus this fall,
- [00:05:33.100]and that number continues to grow,
- [00:05:35.470]It was in the 40's a year ago,
- [00:05:38.040]so seeing that level of not only where they're,
- [00:05:40.630]the students are coming from,
- [00:05:42.270]but for that level of talent all across
- [00:05:44.870]our campus is really exciting.
- [00:05:46.451]Oh that's fantastic.
- [00:05:47.284]Well we certainly have enjoyed sitting down with you
- [00:05:48.960]each week during the football season,
- [00:05:50.870]we'll visit a few times during basketball,
- [00:05:52.780]but cannot believe final exams aren't too far away at all
- [00:05:56.110]once the kids get back on campus on Monday.
- [00:05:57.880]Yeah when you hit the Thanksgiving time frame, right,
- [00:06:00.606]it almost seems early, right,
- [00:06:02.360]for us to have celebrated Thanksgiving this week,
- [00:06:04.760]and then you're looking right down the pipe
- [00:06:06.590]at the end of the semester
- [00:06:07.930]for students coming back next week,
- [00:06:10.420]to finish up their course work while working toward
- [00:06:12.500]that December 15th graduation for many of our students.
- [00:06:17.480]It's been a great year and we're looking forward
- [00:06:19.470]to a great 2019 around the corner.
- [00:06:22.150]Our 150th anniversary here of the University,
- [00:06:24.930]big year for us so Happy Thanksgiving
- [00:06:28.200]to everyone this weekend.
- [00:06:30.250]Ronnie Green with us here on Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:06:32.250]Matt Kotney's back with the Big Ten Blitz, that's next.
