Description
Getting Ready is a child- and parent-focused, strengths-based intervention aimed at enhancing the school readiness of children ages 0-5. The program supports early childhood development by strengthening two types of relationships: parent-child and parent-educator.
Lisa Knoche, research associate professor in the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools, talks about Getting Ready’s purpose, challenges and next steps.

- [00:00:00.330]Getting Ready is a child- and parent-focused,
- [00:00:03.900]strengths-based intervention that focuses on promoting
- [00:00:07.320]school readiness for young children from birth to age five.
- [00:00:11.770]Getting Ready is focused on strengthening relationships
- [00:00:15.040]for young children.
- [00:00:16.740]There's a national debate on parent engagement, currently.
- [00:00:19.790]It sits squarely at the center of many
- [00:00:22.440]policy and practice discussions.
- [00:00:24.950]And, here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:00:26.890]we've developed an evidence-based approach.
- [00:00:28.960]What we hear in the field often is that
- [00:00:31.380]professionals are committed to families.
- [00:00:34.426]They want to involve parents in their programs
- [00:00:37.150]but they're just not sure how to do it.
- [00:00:39.120]And Getting Ready provides them with
- [00:00:40.910]an evidence-based approach.
- [00:00:42.250]It supports up a really effective way of parents
- [00:00:46.110]and professionals collaborating on behalf of children.
- [00:00:50.450]All research to date has been conducted
- [00:00:52.230]through randomized control trials.
- [00:00:54.550]So one of the groups receives a coach,
- [00:00:58.210]is randomized to get a coach,
- [00:00:59.670]and another group doesn't receive a coach.
- [00:01:01.250]And that coach is working with teachers
- [00:01:04.200]on developing their skills and use of
- [00:01:06.370]a particular set of strategies.
- [00:01:08.370]So one of those strategies, for example,
- [00:01:10.040]is affirming parents' confidence,
- [00:01:12.230]and talking with a parent and saying,
- [00:01:14.090]wow, look at how you're holding that book.
- [00:01:16.060]You're positioned it just right
- [00:01:18.390]so Josie can touch the pictures.
- [00:01:20.680]That's gonna keep her engaged and help her
- [00:01:23.060]become a better reader.
- [00:01:24.670]We've had several instances of parents
- [00:01:26.940]actually becoming quite emotional
- [00:01:28.900]when this strategy has been used with them.
- [00:01:30.710]It's not something that we often hear
- [00:01:33.041]what we're doing well.
- [00:01:35.000]Many of the families that we're working with
- [00:01:36.880]haven't had that experience of someone telling them
- [00:01:39.090]actually what they're doing really well
- [00:01:40.460]to support their child's development.
- [00:01:43.010]As researchers, we set out to design, refine,
- [00:01:47.290]and test interventions but at the end of the day,
- [00:01:49.430]it's about uptake and scale-up, and people actually using
- [00:01:53.060]these evidence-based interventions.
- [00:01:54.650]So we've developed this evidence-based intervention
- [00:01:58.020]here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:01:59.550]so we are really excited to have it move out into the field
- [00:02:02.900]and in fact that's what is happening.
- [00:02:05.210]Here in Nebraska, the Getting Ready approach
- [00:02:07.610]has been adopted by Part C services in the state
- [00:02:12.300]that serve infants and toddlers with disabilities.
- [00:02:15.050]We have a similar partnership with South Dakota
- [00:02:17.810]to participate in this research.
- [00:02:19.970]So the potential for impact is certainly great,
- [00:02:23.390]and we look forward to seeing where this goes.
