- [00:00:00.000](guitar strumming)
- [00:00:01.840]We welcome you back, Countdown to Kickoff
- [00:00:03.210]here on the Husker Sports Network.
- [00:00:04.440]Time for our weekly sit down
- [00:00:05.670]with the chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,
- [00:00:07.790]Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:08.623]Here we are, Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio, big school.
- [00:00:13.250]When I come to this campus
- [00:00:14.760]I'm just always amazed how big this campus is.
- [00:00:16.720]This is a big, big school
- [00:00:17.980]with a great reputation around the world.
- [00:00:20.000]You know, Greg, the Big Ten
- [00:00:22.350]has a lot of big schools in it, right?
- [00:00:24.470]So a few weeks ago when we were in Michigan,
- [00:00:26.620]back in September, huge institution.
- [00:00:29.770]Ohio State is another one of those huge institutions
- [00:00:32.810]with a storied reputation, of course,
- [00:00:35.470]academically and in athletics.
- [00:00:37.370]Always a pleasure to be in Columbus.
- [00:00:40.620]I'm looking forward to a great game here today.
- [00:00:42.980]You know we've got a lot going on
- [00:00:44.550]in Husker athletics currently.
- [00:00:46.140]We've got volleyball at home tonight,
- [00:00:48.800]they start another series of road matches,
- [00:00:51.380]they'll go on the road here after tonight's game.
- [00:00:54.150]Our men's and women's basketball teams
- [00:00:55.870]tip off the regular season this week at PBA.
- [00:00:58.380]Looking forward to that.
- [00:01:00.130]Women on Wednesday night are also at home.
- [00:01:04.240]We are so proud of the fact that Husker fans
- [00:01:07.820]support our athletes at such a high level.
- [00:01:10.900]I'm reminded of that Northwestern game here a few weeks ago
- [00:01:13.730]when the stadium at Northwestern
- [00:01:15.630]was more red than purple, right,
- [00:01:18.160]and we certainly have that across all of our sports,
- [00:01:20.640]in basketball, volleyball, football, and beyond.
- [00:01:23.080]So really appreciate the support of Husker Nation
- [00:01:25.600]for our student athletes and for the university.
- [00:01:27.990]Very well put, and this month,
- [00:01:29.610]November is known as crossover month.
- [00:01:31.230]It is a really busy time for our sports programs.
- [00:01:34.210]Well, let's talk about sports.
- [00:01:35.440]Injuries are certainly a factor
- [00:01:36.870]for every team in every season,
- [00:01:38.350]and how well you do may depend on
- [00:01:39.970]whether you get some injuries.
- [00:01:40.850]You have some Nebraska research to talk about
- [00:01:43.590]that could improve procedures
- [00:01:44.960]particularly for those who experience
- [00:01:46.475]types of bone breaks.
- [00:01:48.250]What can you tell our audience?
- [00:01:49.940]Well, this is work in our College of Engineering,
- [00:01:52.710]in our Mechanical and Materials Engineering Department
- [00:01:55.880]of the college, one of the leaders in this area,
- [00:01:59.690]that particular department that we're very proud of
- [00:02:02.150]in engineering, where Michael Sealy,
- [00:02:05.530]an assistant professor in that department
- [00:02:07.970]is now working on medical implants
- [00:02:10.500]that are 3D printed.
- [00:02:12.630]So if you think of it, think of pins or screws
- [00:02:18.780]that people talk about having put in,
- [00:02:20.850]in joint work or things like that,
- [00:02:22.880]he's designing now with 3D printing
- [00:02:26.520]implants that will dissolve and degrade over time
- [00:02:30.480]that healing process from when it is finished
- [00:02:33.650]using a very highly specialized 3D printer
- [00:02:37.630]to build magnesium-based screws, pins, and other implants
- [00:02:41.490]for use in the medical professions,
- [00:02:43.480]again, that will dissolve kind of slowly
- [00:02:45.890]in the body over time and will negate
- [00:02:48.380]the need for follow-up surgeries.
- [00:02:50.620]So taking away that need in the future from implants.
- [00:02:55.400]He's got his own personal story involved in this,
- [00:02:57.950]it's always kind of neat when you see
- [00:03:00.000]a researcher that has been personally impacted
- [00:03:02.530]that then carries that into their own research.
- [00:03:05.910]As a kid, Dr. Sealy underwent surgery
- [00:03:09.040]after tripping and fracturing his left elbow.
- [00:03:11.580]The bone healed, but he had two metal screws
- [00:03:13.990]that were in his left elbow that remained.
- [00:03:16.370]And he still has them in his elbow.
- [00:03:18.070]So he kind of personally relates to this work
- [00:03:21.470]and the importance of that work.
- [00:03:24.170]We have the first 3D printer in our program
- [00:03:27.220]in the world that can integrate materials
- [00:03:29.680]and manufacturing processes while also
- [00:03:32.480]printing highly reactive materials like magnesium.
- [00:03:35.760]So, very very excited about this work.
- [00:03:39.390]For example, think of a 75-year-old woman,
- [00:03:44.960]for example, that might have osteoporosis.
- [00:03:48.340]She doesn't regenerate that bone tissue
- [00:03:51.290]as fast as you would like to see that happen.
- [00:03:55.150]They might need an implant that would degrade more slowly
- [00:03:58.130]as that bone regenerates and reforms
- [00:04:02.030]around that injury or whatever it was.
- [00:04:05.250]So this is exciting stuff with big impact
- [00:04:08.040]for people around the world.
- [00:04:09.800]I'm very excited for Dr. Sealy's work.
- [00:04:11.060]Absolutely, this is gonna impact an awful lot of people.
- [00:04:13.430]What's the next step then for this research?
- [00:04:15.800]Well I think the research is going very well.
- [00:04:17.690]It's in fairly early stages.
- [00:04:19.590]This new 3D printing facility
- [00:04:21.550]was just put in place here recently.
- [00:04:24.870]There's certainly more testing and clinical trials
- [00:04:27.240]that will be required with a medical device like this.
- [00:04:31.460]Those will be underway.
- [00:04:33.580]And there might be other applications
- [00:04:36.020]of this kind of research as well,
- [00:04:37.710]such as enhancing the lifespan of part design
- [00:04:40.810]for a variety of uses, different kinds of implants,
- [00:04:44.560]different kinds of applications.
- [00:04:46.500]So it's just a really cool story
- [00:04:48.850]of a person that has their own history
- [00:04:51.360]with implants from being a child
- [00:04:54.060]that is now developing technology
- [00:04:56.350]and working with that technology
- [00:04:58.300]to solve problems for the good of people.
- [00:05:01.030]Great, well thanks for stopping by.
- [00:05:02.500]Enjoy this game.
- [00:05:03.333]We'll be back in Lincoln next week.
- [00:05:04.670]Absolutely, looking forward
- [00:05:06.100]to folks being back in Lincoln
- [00:05:08.029]and with all this crossover season
- [00:05:10.680]like we were talking about before
- [00:05:11.890]where you can go all kinds of different directions
- [00:05:13.800]with us for sports.
- [00:05:14.633]Go Big Red.
- [00:05:15.580]Ronnie Green here with us on Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:05:17.460]Coming up next, Matt Coatney's got our Big Ten Blitz.
