- [00:00:10.270]really fun learning community events that we get to do.
- [00:00:13.540]The learning community puts it on for us, free of charge.
- [00:00:16.740]So in a learning community, everyone's taking pretty much
- [00:00:19.000]the same class as you, more or less,
- [00:00:20.970]and it's a great way to find help if you're struggling,
- [00:00:23.660]'cause these guys are taking the same classes as you.
- [00:00:25.860]Each mentor has a specific area.
- [00:00:28.240]So, I'm the exploring medicine Learning Community Mentors,
- [00:00:32.390]and so I am just helping the freshmen
- [00:00:34.460]through their freshmen year,
- [00:00:35.540]just letting them know tips
- [00:00:37.460]that would help make them more successful.
- [00:00:42.540]Today, the Learning Community
- [00:00:44.470]came to the Nebraska Supreme Court.
- [00:00:46.940]And we visited with
- [00:00:48.130]the Head Supreme Court Justice of Nebraska.
- [00:00:52.170]How many members are there of the Nebraska Supreme Court?
- [00:00:54.780]He walked us through
- [00:00:55.703]about what the chief justices do,
- [00:00:57.940]what sort of cases they take.
- [00:00:59.480]We all got to meet with him,
- [00:01:01.120]and ask him questions and it's just not something
- [00:01:03.810]you can do without the Learning Community.

- [00:01:15.170]the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nebraska
- [00:01:18.070]if it weren't for this learning community.

- [00:01:27.910]On the trip to Chicago,
- [00:01:28.990]we went to three different places.
- [00:01:31.040]We went to Leo Burnett advertising agency.
- [00:01:33.510]We went to the Onion,
- [00:01:34.510]and we went to Big Ten Network.

- [00:01:38.640]And you got to see a lot of behind the scenes,
- [00:01:41.150]and talk to a bunch of people
- [00:01:42.360]and figure out what their job was like,
- [00:01:44.270]and how they got there,
- [00:01:45.420]and things that they had learned along the way.
- [00:01:48.110]So the great thing about this building
- [00:01:49.410]is we're a full network.
- [00:01:51.015]First couple of weeks of freshmen year,
- [00:01:52.340]you feel really lonely and away from people,
- [00:01:54.550]and being a part of a learning community
- [00:01:56.340]made it so much easier
- [00:01:57.480]because I already had the people
- [00:01:58.860]built in my classes that I already knew.
- [00:02:01.050]So it helped a lot having friends
- [00:02:03.050]that were already there for me,
- [00:02:04.640]and I already knew them.
- [00:02:06.080]Organizers expect 8 thousand people to hit the street...

- [00:02:12.040]We're all building boats,
- [00:02:14.240]and we're all engineering learning community people.
- [00:02:16.410]During this activity, I'm learning that
- [00:02:18.770]it takes a lot more than duct-tape
- [00:02:20.270]and a box to make a boat.
- [00:02:21.910]From being out-of-state, I was scared of making new friends,
- [00:02:24.180]but the learning community made it really easy.
- [00:02:27.205]Our boat didn't work.
