- [00:00:02.149]Welcome back!
- [00:00:02.982]It's Countdown to Kickoff,
- [00:00:03.815]here on the Husker Sports Network.
- [00:00:04.806]Today The Huskers take on Bethune Cookman,
- [00:00:06.986]and as we do each and every week,
- [00:00:08.748]a chance to sit down with the
- [00:00:09.581]Chancellor of the University of Nebraska, Ronnie Green.
- [00:00:11.709]We didn't think too much that we'd be here today,
- [00:00:14.896]talking about a football game, but we all know that
- [00:00:17.378]we had the first one wiped out with weather and had to
- [00:00:20.048]go find the twelfth game and this is what we landed on.
- [00:00:22.700]There are a lot of people that put a lot of work and effort
- [00:00:24.416]into making sure that there was a twelfth game
- [00:00:26.091]for this football team.
- [00:00:26.993]I know you appreciate all the work by people.
- [00:00:29.218][Chancellor Ronnie Green] Well, absolutely.
- [00:00:30.136]You know, we certainly didn't plan it this way
- [00:00:32.143]and mother nature had a different design
- [00:00:34.140]so in the way that our season unfolded and we all know
- [00:00:37.583]with having Bethune Cookman in town this weekend
- [00:00:40.151]and having the opportunity to get that twelfth game
- [00:00:42.454]for our student athletes and for our fans.
- [00:00:45.334]Lots of people put a lot of hard work into
- [00:00:48.175]getting here today and it's going to be an exciting day
- [00:00:50.638]for Nebraska football,
- [00:00:51.940]and of course we've got our volleyball team
- [00:00:53.758]playing tonight against Illinois.
- [00:00:56.604]One of the top teams in the country this year
- [00:00:58.678]and doing very well.
- [00:01:00.159]We did okay against them that first time,
- [00:01:02.138]and we're very pleased to have them at the Bob tonight.
- [00:01:04.681]So, a big day for Husker sports.
- [00:01:06.882]Jane's gonna be tired
- [00:01:07.825]by the end of the day, right?
- [00:01:09.521][Chancellor Ronnie Green] I don't think
- [00:01:10.391]she ever gets tired from that.
- [00:01:11.760]From being able to see Husker athletes play.
- [00:01:14.174]Well, big events on campus
- [00:01:16.001]certainly aren't limit to athletics.
- [00:01:18.899]You've hosted some huge names, that all Nebraskans know
- [00:01:22.528]and this week, and Bob Kerrey and Chuck Hagel.
- [00:01:23.956]Why were these two former senators here on campus?
- [00:01:26.797][Chancellor Ronnie Green] Well, you know they, we have
- [00:01:28.037]lots of opportunities for dialogue and discussion
- [00:01:31.183]on important topics of the day through various lecture
- [00:01:34.972]series across the campus during the year,
- [00:01:37.439]and this past week we had the Heuermann Lecture.
- [00:01:40.907]It's kickoff lecture for this year's season
- [00:01:44.638]with two very prominent Nebraskans,
- [00:01:47.673]Bob Kerrey, former governor, former US Senator,
- [00:01:50.425]former higher education leader was here,
- [00:01:53.366]along with his colleague, Chuck Hagel, former US Senator,
- [00:01:56.461]former Secretary of Defense for our country,
- [00:02:00.142]who were here speaking on
- [00:02:03.159]how to be stewards of civil discourse.
- [00:02:05.616]And the value and the impacts of civil discourse
- [00:02:09.346]on our current and our present and our future.
- [00:02:14.412]Heuermann's, this lecture series, I have a lot of
- [00:02:17.355]personal connection to that.
- [00:02:18.867]Keith and Norma Heuermann are long-time Nebraskans
- [00:02:22.666]and supporters of the University.
- [00:02:24.586]And back about seven or eight years ago now,
- [00:02:27.011]they established a lecture series through the Institute of
- [00:02:29.833]Ag and Natural Resources and that was the venue here,
- [00:02:32.764]that Senator Kerrey and Secretary of Defense Hagel spoke at.
- [00:02:39.877]I really appreciated their perspectives,
- [00:02:42.746]coming from both sides of the political spectrum.
- [00:02:45.705]Their willingness to come together
- [00:02:47.607]and have a civil and productive conversation
- [00:02:49.844]about what it means to be an American,
- [00:02:51.917]what the importance of civility in our public discourse is.
- [00:02:56.032]Working for the greater good as a society.
- [00:03:00.121]So, it's kind of hard to think of a time where
- [00:03:01.880]it might not be more valuable to have that conversation
- [00:03:05.153]than the current.
- [00:03:06.488]Very proud of the opportunity that they had to come visit
- [00:03:09.666]with our students and our community this week.
- [00:03:12.216]It's always great to have them back
- [00:03:13.465]in Nebraska, and certainly here on the UNL Campus.
- [00:03:15.198]What a great event. An important one.
- [00:03:17.742]Hoping this isn't the last of its kind.
- [00:03:19.646]Are there future opportunities like this
- [00:03:21.600]that Nebraskans need to keep an eye out?
- [00:03:23.427][Chancellor Ronnie Green] Like I said earlier Greg,
- [00:03:25.383]as a land grant university we have dialogues like this
- [00:03:27.856]going on all the time.
- [00:03:29.784]If you are on our campus any given week, there will be
- [00:03:31.716]several lecture series happening,
- [00:03:34.558]and we have that obligation to our community
- [00:03:37.312]and to Nebraska as a whole
- [00:03:38.911]as the land grant University for the state.
- [00:03:41.504]In addition to the Heuermann lectures,
- [00:03:43.050]like this one this past week,
- [00:03:44.860]we also had the E.N Thompson forum,
- [00:03:46.942]which is a world-renowned lecture series
- [00:03:49.764]on our campus every year.
- [00:03:51.006]We kicked our first one off a few weeks ago,
- [00:03:52.978]with Jon Meacham here on campus,
- [00:03:55.759]in the 23rd Annual Governer's Lecture in the Humanities,
- [00:03:58.792]that doubled up in that way
- [00:04:00.500]with our first E.N. Thompson lecture.
- [00:04:02.992]And we have another one coming up here shortly,
- [00:04:05.483]on November the 7th, with Nadine Strossen who is an expert
- [00:04:09.060]on the Constitution, and expert on free speech,
- [00:04:12.333]freedom of speech in our society and our culture,
- [00:04:15.078]who will be here for the next E.N. Thompson lecture.
- [00:04:18.249]People can go to enthompson.unl.edu
- [00:04:21.386]and learn all about that.
- [00:04:22.959]Be at the Lied Center here in a couple weeks.
- [00:04:25.728]Well, thank you for opening the door
- [00:04:27.148]to that, for a lot of folks
- [00:04:28.338]who may not know that that happens.
- [00:04:29.682]So, great to see you. Let's have some fun. Big day.
- [00:04:32.615]As you mentioned, football, volleyball.
- [00:04:33.830]Enjoy yourself.
- [00:04:34.689][Chancellor Ronnie Green] Yes, it's always good
- [00:04:36.222]to be in Husker Nation.
- [00:04:37.161]Go Big Red!
- [00:04:37.994]Ronnie Green here with us here
- [00:04:39.496]on Countdown to Kickoff.
- [00:04:40.329]Matt Coatney is back with our big ten blitz.
- [00:04:42.234]That's coming up next.
