"description": "Seward County, Nebraska, like many places in the state and nation, was struggling to meet the demand for childcare. However, recent efforts within the county have yielded promising results in closing this childcare gap. In a conversation with Emily, Jonathan and Jacob from the Seward County Chamber and Development Partnership (SCCDP) shed light on the county's progress. They emphasized the need for sustainable childcare services and addressing challenges faced by providers and families. Moreover, Jacob and Jonathan highlighted the profound impact of quality childcare on children's development and the broader economic well-being of the community. As Seward County continues to pioneer solutions, the collective effort signals a hopeful path forward. \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nWhat did you think about this episode? The following recording showcases the experience of emeritus faculty member Thomas Franti, of BSE, who up until his retirement last year had worked with Dr. Grant Clark in the Bioresource Engineering Department at McGill University, Montreal. This co-taught course introduces students to ecology and engineering design, and allows them to create an ecological engineering design project by collaborating internationally with students from McGill across borders, languages, and cultures.\r\n\r\n(About the Global Learning Community of Practice: We will convene monthly to learn from each other and our non-UNL colleagues, plus regularly share information around global opportunities for students including lower-cost or free travel opportunities, online collaborations between student groups\/classes\/etc., the CASNR Global Learning Hub event series, study abroad, and other methods focused on increased access. Feel free to attend any\/all events, invite others, check out recordings, share resources or ideas, or suggest yourself or a colleague to be featured.)",

Mizer's Ruin: Transforming Design and Architecture in Rural Nebraska

Professor Jason Griffiths and students from the UNL College of Architecture worked for four years planning, building and finishing Mizer's Ruin, a structure located at Cedar Point Biological Station outside Ogallala, Nebraska. The micro dwelling is constructed almost entirely out of eastern red cedar trees that came from less than a mile from the site. This process allows the structure to sequester carbon at a high rate. Mizer's Ruin will soon be available for guests and faculty.

Seward County, Nebraska, like many places in the state and nation, was struggling to meet the demand for childcare.

RPN Today - S2E6 - Food Sovereignty

While the majority of Nebraska’s communities revolve around agriculture, many students in the Lincoln and Omaha metropolitan areas do not feel a connection to the land or their food sources. But for Nebraska’s Native tribal members, not only is that connection a tradition, it’s part of their culture. This is why dozens of Native American middle and high school students gather each Saturday to work a community farm on East Campus part of Rural Prosperity Nebraska’s Indigenous Youth Food Sovereignty Program.
Global For All Session 1: Nebraska & Montreal (McGill) students team up on ecological engineering solutions

As the first programming event for the new CASNR community of practice around global learning, we’re excited to welcome you to this semester’s “Global For All (mini)Series."

This semester, our three sessions are focused on one such inclusive practice in our toolbox of accessible global learning called “collaborative online international learning” or COIL (also referred to as virtual exchange): exploring this methodology and highlighting faculty already implementing it. The following recording showcases the experience of emeritus faculty member Thomas Franti, of BSE, who up until his retirement last year had worked with Dr. Grant Clark in the Bioresource Engineering Department at McGill University, Montreal. This co-taught course introduces students to ecology and engineering design, and allows them to create an ecological engineering design project by collaborating internationally with students from McGill across borders, languages, and cultures.

(About the Global Learning Community of Practice: We will convene monthly to learn from each other and our non-UNL colleagues, plus regularly share information around global opportunities for students including lower-cost or free travel opportunities, online collaborations between student groups/classes/etc., the CASNR Global Learning Hub event series, study abroad, and other methods focused on increased access. Feel free to attend any/all events, invite others, check out recordings, share resources or ideas, or suggest yourself or a colleague to be featured.)
