Dances with Wolves Screen Used Matte Painting for Buffalo Herd, 1990 by Rocco Gioffre (Oil on board.) Collection of Trent Claus. One of only two paintings for Dances with Wolves, this painting by Rocco Gioffre depicts the stampeding buffalo Dunbar (played by Kevin Costner) hunts as the Sioux’s honored guest. While 3,500 real buffalo were used, the painting adds the monumental scale of the buffalo population in the mid-1800s.
