- [00:00:01.353](soft guitar music)
- [00:00:07.390]U.S. infrastructure isn't getting any younger,
- [00:00:09.909]so the time to build and maintain
- [00:00:11.779]smarter, safer transportation systems is now.
- [00:00:15.415]Using technology to improve millions of miles
- [00:00:18.078]of roads, bridges, and railways is challenging
- [00:00:21.186]but not impossible, according to regional and national
- [00:00:23.562]visionaries who attended the BRIDGE-ing Big Data Workshop
- [00:00:26.752]October 8th and 9th, 2015, in Omaha, Nebraska.
- [00:00:31.324]Organized by the University of Nebraska
- [00:00:32.949]Lincoln College of Engineering
- [00:00:34.696]and the University of Nebraska Omaha
- [00:00:36.829]College of Information, Science, and Technology,
- [00:00:39.919]BRIDGE-ing Big Data explored how
- [00:00:41.889]vast amounts of current information
- [00:00:44.164]related to bridge health can be used
- [00:00:46.399]to effectively manage and maintain
- [00:00:48.452]our nation's infrastructure.
- [00:00:50.625]When we talk about deterioration models,
- [00:00:52.819]when we talk about how we can predict bridge behavior,
- [00:00:56.740]one of the problems that we have
- [00:00:58.162]is that we rely so much on periodic
- [00:01:02.187]bridge inspections.
- [00:01:03.427]Which bridge inspectors change, it's subjective.
- [00:01:06.271]And so really our curves, in terms of life cycle costs,
- [00:01:09.908]don't have that good, or could be better, data.
- [00:01:14.539]Photo and video data,
- [00:01:16.142]becoming much more available.
- [00:01:20.287]Our inspectors are out there, you know.
- [00:01:22.806]All it takes is a little cellphone
- [00:01:24.269]to click pictures anymore, and so we've got
- [00:01:26.910]a lot more photo and video records
- [00:01:29.633]going into the data, into our databases.
- [00:01:33.351]Data is going to allow us
- [00:01:34.895]to visualize issues more vividly.
- [00:01:39.728]Other countries are realizing the benefits
- [00:01:41.800]of utilizing big data to help manage infrastructure.
- [00:01:45.315]The United States, once first globally
- [00:01:47.651]in building and maintaining infrastructure,
- [00:01:50.333]needs to act swiftly to realize these benefits
- [00:01:53.117]according to many industry experts.
- [00:01:55.839]If you're going to look at
- [00:01:57.383]the entire network of bridge infrastructure...
- [00:02:03.152]That is not just a civil engineering problem.
- [00:02:06.529]It's not just a construction problem.
- [00:02:08.946]That is a sensor and big data problem
- [00:02:12.116]as much as anything.
- [00:02:13.873]If we can actually begin showing them
- [00:02:16.636]not just the physical state of the bridges today,
- [00:02:19.155]but how much traffic is flowing over them,
- [00:02:22.711]then they suddenly might see the problem
- [00:02:25.129]in a new light that catalyzes action.
- [00:02:28.501]So we bridges talking to cars,
- [00:02:30.492]talking to trucks, talking to the environment,
- [00:02:33.276]to houses, what to ever,
- [00:02:34.881]and that's really going to change the game.
- [00:02:37.958]Strategically placed sensors
- [00:02:39.685]can measure everything from weather and road conditions
- [00:02:42.469]to traffic and applied loads.
- [00:02:44.683]Sensors also make it easier
- [00:02:46.329]to record and communicate data.
- [00:02:48.665]Sensor-driven data replaces the old
- [00:02:50.799]look-and-see approach to assessing
- [00:02:52.729]and managing infrastructure.
- [00:02:54.639]Management then becomes proactive
- [00:02:56.812]rather than reactive whether it's
- [00:02:58.458]notifying motorists of a road closure,
- [00:03:00.856]a deteriorating bridge, or of inclement weather.
- [00:03:04.888]Not having weather reports but having weather predictions
- [00:03:07.224]that are completely accurate because
- [00:03:08.585]they're doing so much calculation
- [00:03:10.759]based on all the sensors in the world
- [00:03:12.120]and satellites, and imagery,
- [00:03:13.380]and this and that and the other,
- [00:03:14.558]where you would actually be able
- [00:03:15.328]to predict the weather days, if not weeks, ahead of time.
- [00:03:18.416]So I think we can deploy technology
- [00:03:20.895]to where we can see deeper into the bridge
- [00:03:22.581]than we currently do and decide about it.
- [00:03:25.444]We've got all of our systems on our cloud
- [00:03:27.637]within Europe, within the UK.
- [00:03:30.563]It lives in Ireland, it lives in Amsterdam,
- [00:03:32.757]it lives in Singapore.
- [00:03:34.098]None of my clients give the slightest concern
- [00:03:36.394]of where that data is.
- [00:03:37.836]As long they understand it when it comes in.
- [00:03:40.701]The use of technology
- [00:03:41.960]to monitor infrastructure isn't a new concept.
- [00:03:44.989]The Charilao Trikoupis Bridge in Greece
- [00:03:47.385]is outfitting with 100 sensors
- [00:03:49.559]that monitor its condition.
- [00:03:51.570]The Tsing Ma Bridge in Hong Kong,
- [00:03:53.724]one of the world's longest suspension bridges,
- [00:03:56.548]is one of the most heavily monitored bridges in the world,
- [00:03:59.250]with GPS sensors on the towers
- [00:04:01.485]and sensors that monitor strain on the bridge's cables.
- [00:04:04.999]Fiber-optics can also be used
- [00:04:06.707]in the structural health monitoring of buildings.
- [00:04:09.713]An 18-story residential building in China,
- [00:04:12.639]Dongshen Garden, features sensors
- [00:04:14.741]that were installed during construction
- [00:04:16.672]that monitor everything from indoor humidity fluctuations
- [00:04:19.821]to underground foundation instabilities.
- [00:04:23.630]It might be possible in a couple years,
- [00:04:25.133]I mean in five, 10 years more likely,
- [00:04:27.849]that a helicopter drone will fly around every bridge,
- [00:04:31.631]recognize damage beforehand, before it happens,
- [00:04:34.882]without even knowing what the damage will be.
- [00:04:36.678]When we invest in infrastructure,
- [00:04:38.445]we invest in the American people.
- [00:04:41.107]When we invest in infrastructure,
- [00:04:43.261]we invest in economic development.
- [00:04:46.236]By bridging big data with infrastructure,
- [00:04:48.614]costs to repair and replace old
- [00:04:50.462]or damaged structures will be reduced.
- [00:04:52.859]Information will be quick and reliable,
- [00:04:55.176]and our infrastructure will be
- [00:04:56.618]better managed and maintained,
- [00:04:58.447]improving its reliability and safety.
- [00:05:01.189]So, all of this change then demands action.
- [00:05:05.923]And to just tell again, remind you
- [00:05:08.108]how fast the world is changing,
- [00:05:09.530]just two days ago, how many of you saw this report?
- [00:05:11.968]That China just unleashed the world's first autonomous bus.
- [00:05:16.712]Just two days ago.
- [00:05:18.174]You can't tell me that this future isn't coming.
- [00:05:22.360]They're building high speed rail in China.
- [00:05:25.651]Japan and Europe have high speed rail.
- [00:05:29.331]And what are we stuck with?
- [00:05:32.852]An interstate system that's crumbling
- [00:05:34.967]and 61,000 bridges that are deficient.
- [00:05:38.219]We can do better in America.
- [00:05:40.291]In order for us to make headways,
- [00:05:41.895]in order for us to make real progress,
- [00:05:44.192]then we need to work together.
