- [00:00:02.687]Early childhood experiences influence
- [00:00:05.076]success later on in school and in life.
- [00:00:08.393]The University of Nebraska-Lincoln
- [00:00:09.948]will shape the quality of those experiences
- [00:00:12.401]with two grants from the US Department of Education,
- [00:00:15.359]totaling 6.5 million dollars.
- [00:00:18.417]We'll be able to really uncover,
- [00:00:21.076]in a very significant way,
- [00:00:23.732]things that matter a lot for children,
- [00:00:26.466]things that matter a lot for classrooms
- [00:00:27.848]and teachers and communities,
- [00:00:29.939]and in particular look over time
- [00:00:32.380]at whether or not those are really the things
- [00:00:34.919]that are going to achieve, for us, our goal,
- [00:00:38.665]of really closing the gap for children at risk.
- [00:00:41.827]A 4.5 million dollar grant funds collaborative
- [00:00:45.198]research in rural and urban schools across Nebraska.
- [00:00:48.772]Projects focus on the preschool
- [00:00:50.883]and early elementary experience
- [00:00:53.247]and assess what works to close the achievement gap
- [00:00:56.584]for children at risk.
- [00:00:58.920]Another study looks at the impact of public policy,
- [00:01:02.238]from school budget issues to all-day kindergarten.
- [00:01:05.607]What works in an urban school district,
- [00:01:07.983]so they may be implementing a very successful policy,
- [00:01:11.797]but taking that policy to a rural area may not work as well
- [00:01:15.518]because the cultures are so different.
- [00:01:18.238]Look right at me.
- [00:01:20.254]Research is conducted by a team
- [00:01:22.069]that crosses disciplines.
- [00:01:24.693]If we're serious about closing the achievement gap
- [00:01:27.583]for our most vulnerable children,
- [00:01:29.311]we have to be serious about approaching it
- [00:01:31.625]from all dimensions, and the only way to do that
- [00:01:34.878]is to bring multiple perspectives together.
- [00:01:37.918]A second two million dollar grant
- [00:01:39.944]puts UNL in the driver's seat
- [00:01:41.959]for the National Early Learning Network.
- [00:01:44.722]UNL will coordinate and lead the efforts of the network
- [00:01:47.847]to shape the best possible experience for children.
- [00:01:51.751]It will allow us to really begin to frame
- [00:01:55.166]how to interpret the findings across this national network
- [00:01:59.761]of early childhood researchers
- [00:02:02.203]to have serious implications for the future
- [00:02:05.594]of research policy and practice
- [00:02:07.780]in the field of early childhood.
- [00:02:09.327]This is absolutely huge for Nebraska,
- [00:02:11.671]for the university system as a whole,
- [00:02:14.274]and just for us who really see, you know,
- [00:02:16.193]Nebraska knows a lot about early childhood,
- [00:02:18.262]so this gives us that platform,
- [00:02:19.947]to I think really share the information nationwide,
- [00:02:22.955]but also even across the world.
- [00:02:24.437]We are the right place
- [00:02:27.450]and we are the right team
- [00:02:28.873]to lead the network as we move forward.
- [00:02:33.332](light-hearted music)
