- [00:00:11.044][Brad Stauffer] You have been instructed to view
- [00:00:13.046]this video because your criminal history background check shows
- [00:00:16.049]you have been convicted of a felony
- [00:00:17.951]or you have one or more misdemeanor convictions
- [00:00:20.387]involving abuse, neglect or sexual misconduct.
- [00:00:23.757]Please review your background check
- [00:00:25.626]to make sure the information provided is accurate.
- [00:00:28.829]Nebraska State Rule prohibits anyone
- [00:00:30.764]with any of these types of convictions, to continue
- [00:00:33.333]with any field experience based courses,
- [00:00:35.836]in a teacher education program, until the individual is approved
- [00:00:39.273]by the Nebraska State Board of Education.
- [00:00:41.508]A list of these convictions can be found
- [00:00:43.644]at the Nebraska Department of Education website
- [00:00:45.846]under Rule 20 or Rule 21. To receive State Board approval,
- [00:00:51.051]you must complete a petition process
- [00:00:52.853]through the Nebraska Department of Education.
- [00:00:55.222]You are required to meet with the CEHS
- [00:00:57.424]Certification Officer as soon as possible
- [00:00:59.726]to receive instructions on proceeding with the petition.
- [00:01:03.330]Contact information is available at the College web site.
- [00:01:06.633]Typically, this process takes three to four months
- [00:01:08.835]to reach closure; so the sooner you start, the better.
- [00:01:12.005]There is no guarantee that completion of the petition
- [00:01:14.441]will result in re-entry to the teacher education program.
- [00:01:18.078]Felony convictions are considered to be more serious
- [00:01:20.213]than misdemeanor convictions.
- [00:01:22.249]If you decide not to complete a petition,
- [00:01:24.384]then you'll need to change your major
- [00:01:26.019]to a non-teacher education program.
- [00:01:28.388]If you do proceed but the State Board of Education
- [00:01:30.958]rejects your request, you'll also need to change
- [00:01:33.794]your major to a non-teacher education program.
- [00:01:36.630]If you do change your major but then decide at a later date,
- [00:01:40.167]to submit a petition, you can do so at any time.
- [00:01:43.670]If your petition was denied and you would like the Board
- [00:01:46.306]to re-consider, you may file another petition
- [00:01:48.842]at any time in the future. There is no limit to the number
- [00:01:51.778]of times you can file a petition.
- [00:01:54.147]Please note that the odds of someone with a felony
- [00:01:56.717]conviction being allowed to proceed
- [00:01:58.485]in a teacher education program are not very good.
- [00:02:01.688]However, your chances of approval increase,
- [00:02:04.191]the longer the time period between when your conviction
- [00:02:06.259]occurred and when you submit the petition.
- [00:02:09.196]This is especially true if you have no other convictions
- [00:02:12.032]since the conviction in question and you behave
- [00:02:14.701]in a manner that is considered exemplary to the community.
- [00:02:17.704]If you have been approved by the State Board of Education
- [00:02:20.440]to continue in a teacher education program,
- [00:02:22.976]you'll be allowed to apply to re-enter
- [00:02:24.878]our teacher education program.
- [00:02:26.713]State Board approval and acceptance into
- [00:02:29.049]our teacher education program are two separate procedures.
- [00:02:32.319]Please see
- [00:02:32.819]Video #1 - Charges Only,
- [00:02:34.921]if your background check
- [00:02:35.989]indicates that you have charges
- [00:02:37.491]but no convictions or if you
- [00:02:38.992]are aware of other charges
- [00:02:40.627]that do not appear
- [00:02:41.361]on your background check.
- [00:02:43.030]You are strongly encouraged to read
- [00:02:45.232]the Professional and Ethical Behavior section
- [00:02:47.501]found in the Undergraduate Bulletin.
- [00:02:49.736]If you have any other convictions
- [00:02:51.204]that are not of interest
- [00:02:52.239]to the Nebraska Department of Education,
- [00:02:54.474]you may still be in violation of this section of the bulletin.
- [00:02:57.878]Please view Video #4
- [00:02:59.146]on Professional and Ethical Behavior
- [00:03:01.114]for further information. You may also have a problem
- [00:03:04.284]with a field placement in
- [00:03:05.485]an early childhood setting
- [00:03:07.054]if you are in violation
- [00:03:07.921]of standards with the
- [00:03:08.889]Nebraska Department
- [00:03:09.790]of Health and Human Services.
- [00:03:11.558]Please see video #2 on
- [00:03:13.326]Early Childhood Placements
- [00:03:14.661]for more information.
- [00:03:16.163]If you incur any additional
- [00:03:17.697]convictions after the completion of your first
- [00:03:20.467]or second background check, and while you're
- [00:03:22.669]still a teacher in the in the student education program,
- [00:03:25.705]you're required to contact either the CEHS
- [00:03:28.308]Director of Professional Experiences
- [00:03:30.343]or the Certification Officer immediately.
- [00:03:33.146]Contact information is available on the College web site.
- [00:03:36.683]Failure to disclose any new charges or convictions
- [00:03:39.519]will place you in violation of the Professional and Ethical
- [00:03:42.722]Behavior code of conduct and may lead to removal
- [00:03:45.492]from the program. If you receive no additional
- [00:03:48.095]convictions, your criminal history will not prevent
- [00:03:50.630]you from completing our program
- [00:03:52.933]or from receiving certification. However, there is no guarantee
- [00:03:56.536]that school districts will be willing to hire you.
- [00:03:59.406]Typically school districts have a higher standard
- [00:04:01.708]that goes beyond state certification requirements.
- [00:04:04.811]You need to be aware of this possibility.
- [00:04:07.214]Therefore, you may complete our program,
- [00:04:09.282]and you may get certified, but you might have difficulty
- [00:04:11.918]finding employment in the teaching field.
- [00:04:14.921]♪ We hope you find this information helpful.
- [00:04:17.190]♪ Feel free to contact the CEHS
- [00:04:19.091]♪ Director of Professional Experiences
- [00:04:20.961]♪ or the Certification Officer with any questions.
