- [00:00:00.130]This is Sopa.
- [00:00:01.490]I'm Shelby.
- [00:00:02.430]And I'm Mandy and our other group member is Anna,
- [00:00:05.100]who is not here to record today.
- [00:00:06.770]And we are UNMC nursing students partnering
- [00:00:09.300]with Big Red Resilience presenting Self-Care for Isolation.
- [00:00:13.450]We're focusing on self-care during COVID times.
- [00:00:17.210]Some usual symptoms of COVID mirror flu symptoms,
- [00:00:20.330]such as fever, running nose, congestion,
- [00:00:23.070]and loss of taste or smell.
- [00:00:24.990]However, some COVID symptoms can be life-threatening.
- [00:00:28.050]If you experience any of the following,
- [00:00:30.020]you should call 911 immediately.
- [00:00:32.150]These symptoms would include trouble breathing,
- [00:00:34.500]pain or pressure in your chest,
- [00:00:36.430]new confusion, and a bluish color to your lips or face.
- [00:00:40.810]It's very important
- [00:00:41.680]to follow the recommendations from the CDC
- [00:00:43.900]to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
- [00:00:46.320]That includes keeping six feet away from other students
- [00:00:49.380]and people as much as you can,
- [00:00:51.370]always wearing your mask in public places,
- [00:00:53.929]cleaning your hands for 20 seconds,
- [00:00:56.910]and cleaning your workspace with the proper disinfectant.
- [00:01:00.300]All these measures are super important
- [00:01:02.000]to protect yourself and others.
- [00:01:04.080]It's also really important to avoid risky behaviors
- [00:01:06.620]such as bar hopping, indoor parties, and concerts.
- [00:01:09.740]Any events that assemble large crowds without a mask
- [00:01:12.740]is very risky and can cause outbreaks of COVID-19.
- [00:01:16.730]Research has found that students in isolation
- [00:01:19.730]show altered social networking and are at increased risk
- [00:01:23.300]for deteriorating mental health outcomes.
- [00:01:25.900]The next couple slides focus on some self-care strategies
- [00:01:29.110]that we recommend for use
- [00:01:30.470]when students are stuck in isolation.
- [00:01:33.310]The first is to get adequate sleep.
- [00:01:35.170]Sleep is essential for cognitive function, mental wellbeing,
- [00:01:38.600]and boosting your immune system and overall health.
- [00:01:41.490]You need to plan out your sleep schedule
- [00:01:43.050]to make sure you are getting
- [00:01:44.100]the recommended amount of hours,
- [00:01:46.070]and the recommended is seven to nine hours.
- [00:01:49.490]Sleep has links to several brain functions
- [00:01:51.530]including concentration, productivity, and cognition,
- [00:01:54.910]and there is a link between a lack of sleep
- [00:01:56.730]and depression and mental illness.
- [00:01:59.080]Next, we would suggest following a routine.
- [00:02:01.870]A routine allows you to maintain your purpose
- [00:02:04.410]and make good use of your time.
- [00:02:06.560]This can be kind of hard in isolation
- [00:02:08.410]but we recommend that you set plans for time to wake up,
- [00:02:11.590]make your bed, shower, and get dressed for the day.
- [00:02:14.910]You should still try to function as close to normal
- [00:02:17.700]as before isolation.
- [00:02:20.550]Exercise and mindfulness is super important
- [00:02:22.960]to your physical and mental health.
- [00:02:24.810]Exercise of the body and mind can also reduce stress.
- [00:02:28.070]Free exercise videos can be found online
- [00:02:30.250]to support physical activity.
- [00:02:32.350]Focused breathing and meditation
- [00:02:34.230]are ways to promote mindfulness.
- [00:02:37.860]We also recommend
- [00:02:38.840]that you stay connected, virtually of course.
- [00:02:42.120]Stay connected with friends and family
- [00:02:44.070]so that your relationships can still blossom
- [00:02:47.250]which will help your mental and emotional wellbeing.
- [00:02:50.520]In 2020, this is especially easy with call, text,
- [00:02:53.980]and video chats to keep in contact
- [00:02:56.090]with all of your relationships.
- [00:02:58.020]Just remember, we need to stay physically distant
- [00:03:00.410]but not emotionally.
- [00:03:02.610]Next, we also recommend
- [00:03:03.870]to adjust your screen time.
- [00:03:05.450]You need to take a break from your screens, the TV, phone,
- [00:03:08.590]computer, and you can try different activities.
- [00:03:11.420]This can include reading a new book, trying a new hobby,
- [00:03:14.330]or even finding a painting class that you can find online.
- [00:03:17.660]If you are on your computer,
- [00:03:18.820]try different options to explore while you isolate.
- [00:03:21.920]Visit sites for virtual tours and experiences.
- [00:03:26.150]Some of those websites are listed here.
- [00:03:28.710]There are many resources to help during isolation.
- [00:03:31.570]Just take out your phone,
- [00:03:32.750]open your camera and scan the QR codes.
- [00:03:35.180]If you'd like, you can pause this video now
- [00:03:37.190]to explore the links.
- [00:03:40.420]Always remember to social distance,
- [00:03:42.350]wear a mask, and stay at home
- [00:03:44.530]all to help stop the coronavirus spread.
- [00:03:47.830]Never forget self-care.
- [00:03:49.480]Being a college student,
- [00:03:50.580]especially during COVID times, is difficult.
- [00:03:53.320]It's so easy to forget about self-care
- [00:03:55.290]for your mental and physical health.
- [00:03:57.860]Always put yourself first
- [00:04:00.060]because you're more resilient than you think.
- [00:04:02.900]You've had a lot thrown at you this year,
- [00:04:04.920]this semester especially, but you're still here
- [00:04:07.500]and look how far you've come.
- [00:04:09.410]And lastly, we can get through this together
- [00:04:11.500]by taking it day by day.
- [00:04:14.590]Please let us know how we did
- [00:04:15.790]with our presentation.
- [00:04:17.170]You can scan the QR code
- [00:04:18.480]and take our short three question survey.
- [00:04:20.730]Thanks for listening.
