- [00:00:07.650]Hi, my name is Sydney and I'm the Academic advisor
- [00:00:10.030]for Global Studies.
- [00:00:11.670]Global Studies is offered through
- [00:00:13.320]the School of Global Integrative Studies
- [00:00:15.220]and will prepare you for a changing and complex world,
- [00:00:18.170]increase your knowledge of international issues
- [00:00:20.740]and develop your skills in critical thinking,
- [00:00:22.790]communication and logical analysis.
- [00:00:26.020]This interdisciplinary program is designed
- [00:00:28.140]to help you understand the growing connectedness
- [00:00:30.390]and diversity of interactions at the global level.
- [00:00:34.220]The Global Studies major has four main components.
- [00:00:37.090]A set of core courses, in depth study of a world language,
- [00:00:41.010]regional and thematic specializations
- [00:00:43.280]and an experience learning abroad
- [00:00:44.990]or an internship with a global perspective.
- [00:00:48.040]The core classes begin
- [00:00:49.130]with academic success and decision making
- [00:00:51.170]in a globalized world followed by international relations,
- [00:00:54.560]introduction to global studies
- [00:00:56.390]and intercultural and intergroup communication.
- [00:00:59.740]Two additional courses round out the core series
- [00:01:02.090]in the junior and senior year.
- [00:01:03.910]The first is a seminar on launching your academic
- [00:01:06.310]and personal and professional career in global studies
- [00:01:10.000]and the final course is a capstone
- [00:01:11.540]that puts together all of the ideas
- [00:01:13.040]and skills that you've learned in this major.
- [00:01:15.490]One of my favorite parts about Global Studies
- [00:01:17.830]is that you get to craft your major
- [00:01:19.550]by picking one region of the world
- [00:01:21.440]and two themes that interest you the most.
- [00:01:24.200]The regions include Africa and the Middle East,
- [00:01:26.650]Asia and Eurasia, Europe and Latin America.
- [00:01:30.430]And the themes that you can pick from
- [00:01:31.850]are identity culture and society,
- [00:01:34.320]global development and service,
- [00:01:36.300]global security and foreign policy,
- [00:01:38.810]human rights and global resources and environment.
- [00:01:42.630]In the College of Arts and Sciences,
- [00:01:44.170]we know that experience is valuable
- [00:01:46.150]and that experience goes beyond the classroom.
- [00:01:49.290]I will work to connect your academics
- [00:01:51.100]with research, internships, education abroad,
- [00:01:54.710]service and leadership experiences
- [00:01:57.020]that match your interests and career goals.
- [00:01:59.960]You can take advantage of things like studying abroad
- [00:02:02.600]in Belize, Czech Republic or Japan.
- [00:02:05.850]Serving as an intern with
- [00:02:07.070]the Federal Bureau of Investigation
- [00:02:09.110]or in Lincoln's Asian Culture Center.
- [00:02:11.830]We're joining the Model United Nations club.
- [00:02:14.197]Volunteering with Lincoln's many refugee communities
- [00:02:17.330]is also a good way to pair your language skills
- [00:02:19.910]with an opportunity to serve the community.
- [00:02:22.950]Your major in Global Studies
- [00:02:24.600]will lay the groundwork for careers in many fields.
- [00:02:27.960]With the valuable skills,
- [00:02:29.860]your time learning from award winning faculty
- [00:02:32.950]and experiences outside the classroom,
- [00:02:35.310]you will be ready to compete for national
- [00:02:37.330]and international fellowships
- [00:02:38.820]or pursue positions in local, state or national government,
- [00:02:43.610]diplomacy and international security
- [00:02:46.460]or nonprofit organizations in your hometown
- [00:02:49.070]or around the world.
- [00:02:50.900]If you think graduate school is in your future,
- [00:02:53.010]the great news is that you'll be uniquely prepared
- [00:02:55.580]for a law school, graduate work in many fields
- [00:02:58.740]and even medicine or healthcare.
- [00:03:01.060]Global Studies students have gone on to work
- [00:03:02.970]for companies and organizations
- [00:03:04.580]such as the Peace Corps, the China Foreign Diplomat Service
- [00:03:08.310]and the United States Department of Homeland Security.
- [00:03:11.820]Alumni from the School of Global Integrative Studies
- [00:03:14.390]are well rounded citizens of the world,
- [00:03:16.550]capable of investigating, navigating, translating,
- [00:03:20.370]doing business and ultimately improving conditions
- [00:03:23.420]here in the U.S. and across borders, oceans and cultures.
- [00:03:27.900]So if you choose to major in Global Studies,
- [00:03:30.270]I look forward to working with you
- [00:03:31.740]to discover who you are and where you want to go.
