- [00:00:07.850]Hello, my name is Sydney,
- [00:00:09.030]and I'm the academic advisor or anthropology.
- [00:00:12.230]Anthropology is a part
- [00:00:13.330]of the School of Global Integrative Studies,
- [00:00:15.710]and its discipline looks at the full range
- [00:00:17.730]of human experience.
- [00:00:19.250]It looks at human origins and prehistoric culture,
- [00:00:22.160]all the way through to modern societies.
- [00:00:25.130]While anthropology spends a lot
- [00:00:26.550]of its time documenting behavior
- [00:00:28.270]and cultural patterns around the world,
- [00:00:30.460]it also looks at preserving cultural diversity
- [00:00:32.790]and improving the lives of people
- [00:00:34.310]who live in the challenging world of today.
- [00:00:37.180]You'll start with core course work
- [00:00:38.550]in archeology and biological and cultural anthropology.
- [00:00:42.830]From there, you can choose to take a wide variety
- [00:00:45.160]of classes in the standard option,
- [00:00:47.280]or you can dive deep in one of two additional options,
- [00:00:50.470]forensics or museum studies.
- [00:00:53.430]The forensic option combines archeology
- [00:00:55.900]and biological anthropology and applies knowledge
- [00:00:58.470]in a variety of ways, including solving crimes
- [00:01:01.120]and identifying remains.
- [00:01:03.280]If you choose to go the route of the museum studies option,
- [00:01:06.420]you would specialize your knowledge and experience
- [00:01:08.530]in managing collections, developing exhibits,
- [00:01:11.280]funding outreach and education,
- [00:01:13.710]and ethical and political aspects
- [00:01:15.720]of the role a museum has in our society.
- [00:01:18.770]In the College of Arts and Sciences,
- [00:01:20.490]we know that experiences outside the classroom
- [00:01:22.680]are extremely valuable, and together, we can identify those
- [00:01:26.370]that support your academic and career interests.
- [00:01:29.960]I encourage you to think about ways
- [00:01:31.300]to engage in research, education abroad,
- [00:01:34.330]internship, service to your local and campus community,
- [00:01:38.210]and developing your leadership skills.
- [00:01:40.950]Here's some specific opportunities
- [00:01:42.530]that we have within anthropology.
- [00:01:44.969]In Anthro Group, you can meet and network
- [00:01:47.190]with your peers and learn from their experience,
- [00:01:49.660]or you might think about volunteering or applying
- [00:01:52.080]to be an intern with the Midwest Archeological Center.
- [00:01:55.490]We also have a fantastic connection
- [00:01:58.090]with the Defense POW MIA Account Agency Laboratory,
- [00:02:01.930]just an hour away at Offutt Air Force Base,
- [00:02:05.040]which works to recover missing military personnel
- [00:02:07.370]who are listed as prisoners of war or missing in action.
- [00:02:10.870]The only other place that you'll find a lab
- [00:02:12.810]like this one is in Hawaii.
- [00:02:15.780]In addition, there are many research opportunities
- [00:02:18.420]as an undergraduate.
- [00:02:19.800]In anthropology, it's important for students
- [00:02:21.820]to learn how to use digital tools
- [00:02:23.860]in the field as well as the lab.
- [00:02:26.430]Students have the opportunity to work alongside faculty
- [00:02:29.320]in the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities.
- [00:02:32.430]Our digital projects allow students and faculty
- [00:02:35.420]to cooperate on common research ideas.
- [00:02:38.740]Taking advantage of our phenomenal faculty
- [00:02:41.060]in the classroom and the experiences outside
- [00:02:43.870]of the classroom often lead our graduates
- [00:02:46.270]in career fields in healthcare and human services,
- [00:02:49.660]intercultural education, cultural preservation,
- [00:02:53.260]and even international business and development.
- [00:02:56.160]Our students have gone on to work
- [00:02:57.520]for the US Forest Service, Americorps,
- [00:03:00.190]the Asian Community and Cultural Center,
- [00:03:02.530]and the National Park Service.
- [00:03:04.870]Alumni from the School of Global Integrative Studies
- [00:03:07.530]are well-rounded citizens of the world,
- [00:03:09.520]capable of investigating, navigating, translating,
- [00:03:13.390]doing business, and ultimately improving conditions
- [00:03:17.020]here in the US and across borders, oceans, and cultures.
- [00:03:21.070]Should you choose to major in anthropology,
- [00:03:23.330]I look forward to working with you
- [00:03:25.050]to discover who you are and where you want to go.
- [00:03:27.561](upbeat music)
