- [00:00:07.076]My name is Kaitlin Ferris.
- [00:00:08.600]I serve as the chemistry advisor
- [00:00:11.290]in the college of arts and sciences.
- [00:00:13.160]Let's talk all things, chemistry.
- [00:00:16.260]A degree in chemistry,
- [00:00:17.093]really prepares students for many career options.
- [00:00:19.460]For those who are wanting to work
- [00:00:21.200]in industry post-graduation,
- [00:00:24.090]that could be in research analysis production.
- [00:00:28.140]I've had students go on to get their
- [00:00:30.410]teaching certificate and teach chemistry.
- [00:00:33.220]A lot of our students who will go on to graduate school
- [00:00:35.920]and potentially even PhD programs,
- [00:00:38.639]it's also a good fit for anyone going
- [00:00:41.200]into a pre-professional program.
- [00:00:42.540]So pre-law pre-med pre-health pre-dental, pre-PT, et cetera.
- [00:00:47.806]Chemistry can also be a very valuable second
- [00:00:50.330]to major for students completing degrees
- [00:00:52.270]in a number of the sciences, math, engineering.
- [00:00:57.310]Within chemistry,
- [00:00:58.430]students will choose between two different degrees,
- [00:01:00.270]bachelor of sciences, or the bachelor of arts.
- [00:01:04.058]The bachelor of science programs recommend for students
- [00:01:06.260]planning on going to graduate school,
- [00:01:08.600]who wants to do research at that level
- [00:01:11.030]or professional careers in chemistry.
- [00:01:12.840]It's also a good choice for premed folks.
- [00:01:15.650]Bachelor of arts is designed for students who are needs
- [00:01:18.430]some undergraduate training and chemistry
- [00:01:20.610]as preparation for professional careers,
- [00:01:24.540]and it fits easily
- [00:01:26.020]into all of those pre-professional programs,
- [00:01:28.080]I had mentioned before.
- [00:01:29.760]There is a 12 hour difference between the two degrees.
- [00:01:34.370]However, all students will take general chemistry,
- [00:01:37.060]Organic chemistry, physics, calculus,
- [00:01:42.240]at that junior and senior level
- [00:01:43.720]students will get to choose between inorganic chemistry
- [00:01:45.830]and analytical chemistry, between biochemistry
- [00:01:49.060]and chemical biology,
- [00:01:50.350]and finally, all students will take physical chemistry,
- [00:01:53.550]which is called P-chem.
- [00:01:54.880]So the bachelor of science students will actually take
- [00:01:57.220]11 hours of P-chem.
- [00:01:59.000]The bachelor of arts folks will take four hours.
- [00:02:02.660]Some of the skills that you will develop
- [00:02:05.880]as a chemistry undergrad major,
- [00:02:08.290]being able to design and implement research experiments,
- [00:02:12.010]reading, understanding,
- [00:02:13.020]and critically reviewing scientific information,
- [00:02:15.500]defining problems, identifying causes,
- [00:02:18.800]composing putting together
- [00:02:20.190]and presenting information, logical information.
- [00:02:23.850]You'll be able to navigate some complex,
- [00:02:26.580]ambiguous projects and environments,
- [00:02:28.800]and then finally demonstrating ethical conduct
- [00:02:30.840]in research activities.
- [00:02:33.650]Speaking of research,
- [00:02:35.290]going back to the bachelor of science
- [00:02:36.970]verses bachelor of arts,
- [00:02:37.900]the bachelor science requires
- [00:02:39.070]two hours of chem, three 99 research however,
- [00:02:41.390]we encourage all students,
- [00:02:45.300]to take the opportunity to do research with our faculty.
- [00:02:48.870]The university also has U-care,
- [00:02:51.950]applications that go out
- [00:02:53.250]that is a really good opportunity for students.
- [00:02:56.520]our use, which is an intensive summer research program
- [00:02:59.800]that students tend to apply for
- [00:03:01.960]after their sophomore year, junior year.
- [00:03:04.570]my always encourage all my students,
- [00:03:05.980]to work with our career coaches in terms of
- [00:03:08.710]making sure they are in the know about upcoming internships,
- [00:03:12.380]part time jobs within chemistry,
- [00:03:14.870]any opportunity that you have
- [00:03:16.770]to gain a little bit of experience,
- [00:03:20.410]to help you navigate and figure out what you wanna
- [00:03:22.102]do with your chemistry major.
- [00:03:24.240]Awesome, great.
- [00:03:28.060]Finally, some jobs that recent students have gone into,
- [00:03:32.110]we have had students that go into,
- [00:03:36.510]a lot of chem lab technicians, principle scientists,
- [00:03:41.040]Product associates, Chemical contractors,
- [00:03:44.740]Quality management, Chemists, Lab techs,
- [00:03:50.420]Quality tech, et cetera.
- [00:03:54.010]So lots of opportunities within chemistry.
- [00:03:56.760]I look forward to meeting with any of you
- [00:03:59.970]who want to talk more about getting,
- [00:04:04.410]majoring and getting a degree in the college of arts
- [00:04:06.250]sciences and chemistry.
- [00:04:08.270]Thanks for listening.
- [00:04:10.145](upbeat music)
