- [00:00:07.610]Hello all my name is Kaitlin.
- [00:00:08.950]I also serve as the sociology advisor
- [00:00:11.970]within the College of Art Sciences.
- [00:00:15.000]So what is sociology?
- [00:00:17.798]Sociology is the study of social life, social change,
- [00:00:21.660]social causes and consequences of human behavior.
- [00:00:25.360]Sociologists investigate the structure of groups,
- [00:00:27.980]organizations, and societies,
- [00:00:30.160]and how people interact within these contexts.
- [00:00:33.760]So major or even a minor in sociology within the college
- [00:00:37.450]provide students vital intellectual and occupational skills.
- [00:00:41.340]This includes analytical thinking,
- [00:00:43.230]creative problem solving,
- [00:00:45.200]effective written and oral communication,
- [00:00:47.800]collecting, analyzing, interpreting,
- [00:00:51.070]and presenting data is a big one.
- [00:00:53.410]That is a big one.
- [00:00:54.740]And also gaining expertise regarding the impact
- [00:00:56.860]of social and cultural dynamics on individuals and society.
- [00:01:03.390]What I think students love most about sociology
- [00:01:06.040]is the opportunity to really create your own program.
- [00:01:11.620]So there are five core courses that all students will take.
- [00:01:15.290]Introduction to sociology, or social problems,
- [00:01:20.400]205 which is social research,
- [00:01:22.200]206 which is statistics, 355 which is theories
- [00:01:26.450]and 489, which is kind of the senior capstone project.
- [00:01:30.310]Outside of that, students get to choose
- [00:01:32.370]what classes they wanna take.
- [00:01:35.640]Different areas include health, crime and deviance,
- [00:01:39.150]family, inequality, research.
- [00:01:43.900]So I think that makes for a really, really cool
- [00:01:45.480]experience for students.
- [00:01:47.090]There's also opportunities to study abroad
- [00:01:49.640]and a lot of our students due COVID pending
- [00:01:53.850]internships are highly, highly encouraged.
- [00:01:56.920]So social 397 is our internship course.
- [00:02:00.370]So you work with myself,
- [00:02:02.430]you work with career coaches faculty
- [00:02:03.930]to navigate finding an internship,
- [00:02:08.230]and then you can contract that for actual classes credit.
- [00:02:12.350]Another unique aspect within sociology
- [00:02:14.930]is all of those core courses that I mentioned before.
- [00:02:17.770]They're offered over the summer
- [00:02:19.590]and tend to be smaller courses
- [00:02:23.050]outside of that introduction course.
- [00:02:26.320]Additionally research is encouraged.
- [00:02:30.360]Sociology has what they call you start program,
- [00:02:32.500]which is looking for undergraduates
- [00:02:34.300]to help sociology faculty in their research.
- [00:02:37.910]And sometimes that might be as low key
- [00:02:40.500]as transcribing interviews,
- [00:02:43.730]but what a really, really cool opportunity
- [00:02:45.690]to connect and get some experience.
- [00:02:50.870]So let's talk about what you do with the sociology major.
- [00:02:53.930]It's not a direct pipeline or certain job post graduation,
- [00:02:56.640]and sometimes that can be a little bit
- [00:02:58.070]intimidating for students,
- [00:03:00.210]but what it does is it opens up a ton of doors and avenues
- [00:03:04.860]starting with maybe working in human services.
- [00:03:06.940]So if you wanna go to grad school
- [00:03:08.600]and you wanna be a counselor,
- [00:03:09.910]or if you wanna work
- [00:03:10.743]with case management, rehabilitation services,
- [00:03:14.200]if your interest area is more criminal justice related,
- [00:03:16.590]you can work in law enforcement,
- [00:03:17.810]corrections, probation, parole.
- [00:03:21.330]If you have an interest in law,
- [00:03:22.880]maybe you work on nonprofit organizations,
- [00:03:29.140]maybe you're in the corporate world,
- [00:03:31.460]education you can get a master's degree
- [00:03:34.970]with school counseling, administration,
- [00:03:37.210]student affairs, adult learning.
- [00:03:39.090]I mean, there's so many government business,
- [00:03:41.160]environmental sociology working, you know, for outdoor rec,
- [00:03:44.510]water conservation, recreational planning,
- [00:03:48.700]so many opportunities.
- [00:03:50.590]I just really encourage students during their undergrad
- [00:03:54.150]to just kind of collect any and all opportunities
- [00:03:57.170]that come across your plate to gain that experience.
- [00:04:00.580]Some of the, I think most,
- [00:04:02.820]most talked about courses or fun courses for students
- [00:04:05.410]are 209, which is sociology of crime
- [00:04:09.470]309 which is drugs and society, 471 is human sexuality,
- [00:04:16.110]but honestly all of the faculty within sociology are great
- [00:04:20.850]and students really, really love the course programs.
- [00:04:24.350]So if you wanna talk more things about sociology,
- [00:04:28.760]let me know.
- [00:04:29.654](bright upbeat music)
